At times, even the best hydrocolloid flanges can struggle to cope with the demands of a clinical condition of an ostomate, or busy lifestyle. ‘Framing’ with tapes, strips or patches is one way to assist where additional adhesion is required. But this method can cause problems in itself, such as adverse reactions to the strong adhesives (glues) causing skin irritation and excoriation.

Hydrocolloids are universally acknowledged to provide the optimal combination of adhesion and skin friendliness. Indeed all advanced appliance manufacturers fit hydrocolloid flanges to their pouches.
