History of Welland

Welland Medical, a British company founded in 1988 is one of the international leading brands in stomacare. Part of the CliniMed group of healthcare companies, we specialise in the design, development and manufacture of stomacare pouches and accessories.

Welland Medical is one of the leading stoma brands here in the UK and also exports products worldwide, providing comfort and discretion to stoma patients and helping them lead normal, active lives. We are continuously growing as a company, operating machines day and night to meet the ever increasing demand for Welland Stoma products.

Welland Medical Timeline:

1988 Welland Medical was founded

1989 Welland Medical launched its first range of Colostomy and Ileostomy products

1994 Welland Medical’s products become available internationally, as the Netherlands and Sweden join Welland’s International Network of Distributors – today Welland Medical distributes products throughout the world. During the period 1993-95 Welland achieved two SMART Awards for innovation, for the product that would later become the world’s first flushable colostomy pouch, Impact

1996 – Welland launch the world’s first flushable colostomy pouch, Impact. Displaying true innovation in stomacare, Impact remained the only flushable pouch available for many years

1997 Welland introduced their first two piece pouch range, Liberty II, and were also proud to be presented with a Sussex Business Award in the innovation category, for the Impact flushable pouch

1998 Welland joined CliniMed Holdings group of healthcare companies and launched its first Urostomy pouch

1999 Impact was awarded Millennium Product Status by the UK Design Council and was displayed in the Millenium Dome, as one of the products that represented the best innovation and creativity in British business

2001 Continuing to provide ostomates with innovative stomacare solutions, Welland launched it’s first 3D flange product; Curvex®

2002 Welland Medical achieves Investors In People status

2003 Launch of the Flair® closed and drainable pouches

2004 Welland launched their second generation flushable pouch Flair® Xtra, with additional features and benefits for ostomates worldwide. This year also saw the launch of Welland’s new integral closure system for drainable pouches. The new innovative system improved security and comfort for drainable pouch users

2005 Building on the innovation and success of the 3D range, Welland launch Convex flanges

2008 Welland launched their new two piece pouch range, Flair® 2 closed and drainable pouches, featuring Welland’s renowned Hyperflex Hydrocolloid flanges and Dual-Carb filter

2009 An important year for Welland with the launch of a number of new products, the Flair Active® Closed and Drainable pouches, and the new revolutionary flushable pouch Flair Active® Xtra. Welland Medical are still the only manufacturers of a one piece flushable pouch, worldwide

2010 Welland launch their latest Urostomy pouches, Flair Active® and Flair® 2, with improved benefits for user comfort and security. Welland Medical also achieved Investors In People Silver standard
