Fitting a 1 Piece Closed (Colostomy) Pouch

If you are using a drainable or urostomy product, ensure that the clip or tie has been applied first (see Drainable Pouch Closure Mechanisms). If you are using a urostomy appliance please make sure that the tap is in the closed position

Hold the flange between your hands for a minute or so, to enable the hydrocolloid to warm up. This helps with its adhesive properties and ensures a secure bond

Remove the backing paper (or ‘release Paper’) from the flange using the easy release tab

To ensure a snug fit, fold the flange in half away from the body and place the bottom of the hole in the flange around the underside of your stoma.  Work the whole flange into place

Run your fingers around the edges to make sure the flange is secure

Removal of the closed pouch
Carefully lift and peel the wafer slowly downwards

With the other hand apply pressure to the abdomen
to aid comfortable removal. This also helps reduce
trauma to the skin

Disposal of a Closed Pouch
Unless you are using Welland’s disposable pouch (FreeStyle® Flushable, Flair Xtra® or Impact®) DO NOT attempt to flush any part of your pouch down the toilet as it may block your sewage system

The contents of your pouch should be emptied into the toilet prior to disposal

If you are using a drainable pouch, the plastic clamp can be kept for future use; however the wire ties are disposable
